The Shark, named for its rugged and aggressive design, will be manufactured in China and potentially Mexico, marking BYD’s entry into the competitive world of pickup trucks. Aimed at rivals such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, this mid-size truck combines performance and practicality.
In terms of design, the Shark stands out with its boxy fenders and square headlights and taillights, complemented by full-width lighting elements reminiscent of the Ford F-150 Lightning. Its front skid plate and bold “BYD” lettering on the tailgate enhance its resilient and robust persona.
Under the hood, the Shark is a force to be reckoned with. Its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, paired with dual electric motors, produces an impressive 430 horsepower. While torque figures are not yet available, BYD claims a substantial towing capacity of 5,512 pounds and a maximum payload of 1,841 pounds. Sprinting from 0 to 62 mph is estimated to take just 5.7 seconds.
One of the Shark’s most impressive features is its range. With a claimed electric-only range of 62 miles and a combined range of over 520 miles when paired with a full tank of gas, it surpasses many of its competitors. The fast-charging capability via its CCS1 port further enhances its appeal.
Step inside the Shark, and you’ll find a thoughtful blend of technology and rugged practicality. The dashboard features a rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto and can be used in landscape or portrait mode. A separate 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster provides essential driving information.
The 2024 BYD Shark will initially be available in Mexico in two trim levels: GL and GS, both offering the same powerful 430-hp powertrain. Reservations are currently open in Mexico, with pricing starting at $53,938, making it a competitive option in the mid-size pickup truck segment.
